I love Funkadelic's "Friday Night, August 14th". Since it's that actual night tonight, we can celebrate with the song!

And let us not forget the co-writer of "Friday Night, August 14th" bassist and vocalist on this song:

BILLY BASS NELSON - my friend and our brother, Funkadelic founder and so much more in the world of music (including Motown 70s and work for Norman Whitfield Productions). Billy passed on to another energy sphere this February at the age of 75 (Rolling Stone obit here).

I have posted several tributes to Billy Bass over the years - this Billy tribute from 2021 (link here) is a great music career overview with a few DJ mixes and my on-air review from The Face Radio of Billy's more recent work for FSQ and Soul Clap.

This mix FSQ produced for Le Visiteur a few years ago, still available on SoundCloud (link here) goes even deeper - for instance, who knew Billy Bass Nelson performed on The Coasters' 1978 disco one-off "Disco Calypso" but you can definitely hear his trademark bass style on that song which kicks off the mix. The mix includes a 1967 cover "Sargent Lonely Pepper's Hearts Club Band" by the Parliaments, with Billy playing guitar - stuff like that, it gets really wild with the bottomless 60s, 70s, and 80s catalog finds and includes more modern moments - for instance Billy playing guitar and bass on remixes for Kraak & Smaak and Life On Planets.

FSQ's forthcoming album "Nightlife Geography" (2027) will feature the last of our collaborations with Billy Bass Nelson including the songs "Pain & Beauty" (already released as a single here), "Photograph Of The Night", "You Don't Say" and "On The Map".

Multiple original mixes of FSQ's "On The Map" featuring Billy Bass Nelson and multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist Eugene Tambourine will be released in September including extended dub versions where you will really hear Billy's spectacular acoustic guitar work and bass playing on this Balearic ballad.
