MY SERIES FOR MUSIC X - ELECTRONIC / DANCE MUSIC INDUSTRY Meanwhile, I'm in the middle of publishing a series of posts for Music X about "Official Remixes in the world of music streaming". Electronic / Dance music is the 6th most streamed genre in the US according to Luminate’s 2025 Year End Music report with 51.3 billion streams of tracks that fall in the genre in 2025. In this series, I reveal that official remixes that fall within the genre can account from anywhere to 30%-50% of the catalog of Electronic / Dance music artists. Therefore I think it’s important to detail for the Electronic / Dance industry how remixes are being defined, marketed, merchandised and consumed. If YOU have a vested interest in how remixes are merchandised and marketed in the world of music retail and streaming, please feel free to take the following survey. This industry survey is designed for Artists / Producers, and those who work on releasing remixes e.g. Record Labels, delivering remixes to DSPs e.g. Distributors, and merchandising remixes at DSPs e.g. DSP Editorial Staff. I'll be presenting the results at the Association For Electronic Music general meeting at the Amsterdam Dance Event.
Here's the summary of the first part of the series, if you want to jump any of the specific sections on Music X.
NEW FSQ MUSIC OUT NOW: My group FSQ is an EP coming out October 1st with SIX different original mixes (e.g. these are arranged from the original session without remixers coming on board to produce) of a song we collaborated on with Parliament-Funkadelic bassist / guitarist Billy Bass Nelson and vocalist / multi-instrumentalist Eugene Tambourine - titled ON THE MAP. It's very Balearic and chilled out - Billy's daughter Ebony remarked upon hearing it that "it has a 70's vibe, like Christopher Cross vibe, with funk..". I think that's a great way to describe it. Certainly a departure from our usual sound. Morgan Wiley and I are on the track representing FSQ, and Andrew Marsh, who's joined us on the live band performances of FSQ & The SQs is on drums. You can pre-order the entire EP for October 1st now and receive two mixes right away - including the FSQ FUNKADELIC TOUCH VERSION and an instrumental of a deep rare P-Funk cult classic, the similarly titled THE MAP SONG, which Billy Bass, Gabe Gonzalez and I recorded in 1996 at Bill Laswell's Brooklyn recording studio.
There are two other mixes out this week - THE GREENPOINT AVENUE VERSION and CASERTA'S 2 THE STUDS DUB, in which producer pro CASERTA breaks down the original 15-minute long recording session into a dub version that highlights Billy Bass Nelson's iconic bass playing and beautiful acoustic guitar. Again, the beautiful artwork for the release is from Unknown Pleathers aka Noah Prebish.
Thanks for reading and I hope to see you see soon at Beatport Connect, around San Francisco, or soon ... Amsterdam Dance Event! Please always be in touch - your friend Charlie aka Chuck Da Fonk Fishman! |
I love Funkadelic's "Friday Night, August 14th". Since it's that actual night tonight, we can celebrate with the song! Billy passed on to another energy sphere this February at the age of 75 (Rolling Stone obit here). I have...
